The word "handmade" gets thrown around a lot in the shoe world. But what does it actually mean? And does it really make a difference to a dancer?
A Factory vs A Workshop
Mass-produced shoes are made by machines and assembled by workers performing a single repetitive step in a long industrial process. Each worker touches the shoe for seconds. The goal is throughput - thousands of units per day. A handcrafted dancing shoe is something else entirely. In the workshops that produce Lisadore shoes, skilled artisans follow each pair through multiple stages of production. The leather is selected, cut, shaped, lasted, stitched, soled and finished by human hands at every step. Six people work on a single pair of your shoes. Six pairs of eyes check that everything is exactly right.
Are there little 'faults'? Yes, there might be, we jokingly say, up to a 1000, and that is what makes it so special. Knowing it was human hands that made these shoes, not machines.
Why This Matters For Dancers
For a dancer, this is not just romantic philosophy - it has direct practical consequences. A handcrafted shoe can be lasted more precisely to the shape of a real human foot. The padding can be positioned exactly where your foot needs it. The heel can be set at the precise angle that provides maximum stability. The sole can be treated to give exactly the right amount of friction for your dance style. These are things a machine simply cannot do.
Our Custom Made Option
We even offer fully made-to-order shoes at Lisadore. Your measurements, your choice of leather, your heel height, your design preferences - all communicated to our shoemakers, who then build your pair from scratch. Yes, it takes around 8-10 weeks. Yes, there is high demand. But when those shoes arrive - built specifically for your feet by master craftsmen - it is something rather special...
The Patience Is Worth It
We know 8-10 weeks feels like a long time when you want beautiful new shoes. But think about what is happening in those weeks: six skilled craftsmen, working in their atelier, building something exactly- and just for you! That is worth waiting for, isn't it?
